In 2018, a small group of Christians from South Williamsport United Methodist Church began fundraising for and organizing a mission trip to Honduras. The mission was finally realized about a year later, when six individuals traveled to the Happy World School in San Marcos de Colón. Since then, several more trips have occurred. Classrooms have been updated with fresh paint, LED lighting, ceiling fans, etc.
The work expanded in the subsequent years to include a partnership with a church in Barranquilla, which is located in a poor farming community near San Marcos de Colón, and the Virginia Bowen Children’s Home on Amapala Island, a bay of the Pacific Ocean.
SWCHH diligently fundraises year-round for roughly 150 children, Pre-K through ninth grade, in southern Honduras who attend Happy World School. The goal is to fund the operating expenses of the Happy World School and to provide every student with a Christian education so they can become productive citizens and effective disciples of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The fundraising also helps provide students with uniforms, shoes, snacks, lunches, and classroom materials.
When funds are available, mission trips are scheduled for January and July each year. The mission trip teams perform handyman maintenance projects as needed. VBS programs are offered during the school winter vacation period. On each trip, a picnic is provided that includes lunch, piñatas, and bags of food for every staff member and family.
Today, the organization comprises approximately 30 people from 8 different churches in Pennsylvania.
We are immeasurably grateful for the growth we’ve experienced, and every gift of every size that fosters hope in Honduras.
We are a tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization.
